Plate II · The Sacro-Occipital Technique
Two ends of one spine
S.O.T. was developed by Dr. Major Bertrand DeJarnette in the 1920s. It looks at the sacrum, at the base of your spine, and the occiput, at the back of your skull, as two ends of one system, and it is gentle by design.
Dr. Doyle checks how the pelvis sits and how the spine and the skull are moving.
Padded wedges, called blocks, go under the pelvis while you lie on the table. Your own body weight does much of the gentle work.
Low-force corrections follow, from the sacrum up the spine. No quick twists.
Many visits end with relaxing cranial adjusting maneuvers at the head, the other end of the same spine.

Gentle S.O.T. adjustments
Dr. Doyle’s chiropractic adjustments use a soft-tissue technique called the Sacro-Occipital Technique, or S.O.T. It was developed by Dr. Major Bertrand DeJarnette in the 1920s and looks at the relationship between the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine) and the occiput (the back of the skull), and everything in between.
S.O.T. is gentle. It often uses padded wedges, called blocks, placed under the pelvis while you lie on the table, with low-force corrections instead of quick twists. Many visits also include reflexology to the spinal muscles and relaxing cranial adjusting maneuvers that complement the adjustment.
Craniopathy
Craniopathy is a specialised field in chiropractic. It deals with the micro-motion of the cranial vault (the skull), its distortions, and how they relate to the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and the nervous system.
Dr. Doyle has extensive post-graduate hours in Chiropractic Craniopathy and specialises in an adjusting approach that pays particular attention to how the pelvis, the spine and the cranium work together, with precise analysis and gentle corrections.
Arms & legs, too
Dr. Doyle also treats extremity problems, such as wrists and knees. As she likes to remind her patients: “Arms and legs need chiropractic care, too!”
Soft-tissue work
When it’s needed, Dr. Doyle adds manual therapy or massage techniques to a visit, such as reflexology to the spinal muscles and trigger point therapy.
Gentle traction
Gentle traction to the spine is part of some visits, depending on the degree of muscle spasm.
Corrective exercises
We offer our patients individualized exercises and stretches for their own unique problem. You can do them in the comfort of your own home, so they play an active role in your care between visits and help your body stay in balance.
Lifestyle advice
A healthy lifestyle supports chiropractic care. We advise our patients on activities that suit their own health goals, and which activities to avoid for now. Good health is a collaborative effort between our office and our patients; our goal is a fulfilling, happy and active life for years to come.
Nutritional counseling
Overall good health includes a nutritious diet. Dr. Doyle gives specific vitamin and supplement recommendations and advice on healthy food choices, and she will happily put together a structured nutritional program based on your individual needs.
She advises people who need nutritional support at a basic maintenance level, and those who need to replenish what they are low on.
Auriculotherapy
Dr. Doyle studied needle-less acupuncture and auriculotherapy (stimulating points on the ear) and offers auriculotherapy, including for people working on weight loss. Ask her whether it suits you.
Hot pack therapy
Hot pack therapy is part of some visits.
Spinal & posture screenings
Posture and spinal screenings often turn up useful health information. That is why we provide screenings at area malls, community events, health fairs and places of employment. Contact us to arrange a screening at your event or workplace.
The lending library
Our office has a lending library. Dr. Doyle, an antiquarian collector of books on health (and cookbooks), encourages her patients to learn as much as they can about their health, so they can partner with her in their chiropractic journey.
